Lichties claim point, but take little credit

-

Arbroath took a point from their trip to Berwick on Saturday, but manager Dick Campbell was far from happy with his team’s performance.

In fact, the Lichties’ boss was more impressed with Berwick’s resilience than he was with his own team.

“Berwick have had a difficult week after their cup exit at the hands of Hawick,” he said.

“But there is a saying, ‘Beware the injured lion,’ and I think this was a perfect example of that.

“We didn’t give them the respect they deserved.

“We could have been two or three goals up, but instead it was only 1-0, and then we switched off.

“There was only one side to come out of the match with any credit and it wasn’t us.”

Arbroath took the lead on 20 minutes when former Berwick player David Gold skipped his way past two defenders on the Rangers’ left and fired low past keeper Kevin Walker.

Berwick boss John Coughlin said it was a poor goal to give away, and the fourth scored by a former player against his side in the space of eight days after Josh Morris netted a hat-trick in the 3-2 Scottish Cup defeat.

Early in the second half Berwick were awarded a freekick outside the box, and leading scorer Steven Thomson curled a shot past a helpless Ricky Gomes.

Rutherford and fellow strikers Jordyn Sheerin and Greg Hurst both had chances later in the game to win it for the Borderers, but they were unable to convert.

In a game which Campbell described as “not a classic,” Arbroath’s best chances fell to Martin Scott, who headed wide in the first half, and Mark Whatley, who waltzed his way through the Berwick midfield in the second half, but pulled his shot wide of the target.
