A fortnight of frustration ahead as roadworks cause chaos during city rush hour.

Traffic was queued back as far as Broxden Services as drivers tried to get into city centre

Roadworks on Perth’s Glasgow Road which caused significant frustration for rush hour motorists making their way into the city will last for almost a fortnight.

Significant queues built up on the western approach yesterday as pavement repairs take place.

Three-way traffic light controls have been introduced at the junction of Glasgow Road and Needless Road.

By 9am, a huge number of drivers were still struggling to make their way into Perth city centre.

It took well over half an hour for the congestion to ease, by which time many people would have found themselves late for work.

Vehicles queued back as far as Broxden Services in one direction and towards Riggs Road in the other at the height of the morning congestion.

Many caught up in the morning misery took evasive action, to avoid queues and find alternative means of heading into the city, leading one motorist to question the safety of some of the manoeuvres.

He said: “There will have been plenty of people late for work this morning.

“The works have been under way for a few days now but they still seem to have caught a lot of people by surprise.

“The queues were pretty significant and started almost as far back as Broxden Services.

“I was surrounded by an awful lot of frustrated people and I’m sure lots of them will have been late for work.

“There were people doing U-turns all over the place, some of them a bit hairy, as they tried to find different ways of getting into the centre.

“I’m sure everyone will be glad when this is over.”

The works being undertaken by Tayside Contracts are to improve pavements between Necessity Brae and Murray Crescent.

They are scheduled to continue for the best part of a fortnight, with November 11 likely to be the earliest date for completion.
