Wanderers and Grove enjoy double success
Grove Menzieshill and MJV Wanderers enjoyed a doubly successful 24 hours with advancement to the quarterfinals of the Scottish Cup preceding Sunday’s league victories, writes our women’s hockey correspondent.
Wanderers were off the pace as cup rivals Erskine Stewart’s Melville raced into a 2-0 lead courtesy of Robin Henderson.
A late charge instigated a four-goal recovery, with Charlotte Watson adding a hattrick to Vikki Bunce’s set-piece in the final 20 minutes.
Defender-turned-striker Becca Murray found the Midas touch, netting a treble in their league encounter with Cala Edinburgh as Jess Ross and Vikki Bunce increased the tally to 5-0.
Elsewhere on Saturday, Grove’s Katie Robertson and Hanna McKie shared four goals against MCC Western’s third squad, with Rhona McGregor, Louise Carroll and Ali Bell ringing up the 7-0 result.
Sunday’s shift was much harder but the Dundee outfit kept their title hopes on track, winning a best-of-seven scrap against previously unbeaten Wildcats.
Robertson’s double made it 2-2 at the break, with Iona Armour and Sarah Jamieson edging Grove ahead before a late Wildcats strike took it to the wire.
Madras FP went through to the quarter-finals of the District Cup following a concession from Fidra Lions.
Monarchs’ 2-1 win over Highland puts the local side into the hat for the semi-finals in March. Brechin Thistles pressed home their Midland title claim, with Katie Stewart’s single installing them at the top of the table.
A treble from Ashley Bunce highlighted Wanderers IIs’ best result of the season as Dundee University III went down 5-0.
Grove III were in sparkling form in Division 2 with Jojo Johnston and Lindsay McGovern on target twice.
Abbie Chapman, Eleanor Greenwood and Holly Duval wrapped up the 7-0 score against Dundee University IV.
Meanwhile, the Midland Indoor League gets under way at Douglas Sports Centre, Dundee, tonight with the following schedule: Monarchs v Wanderers III (7pm), Grove Menzieshill v Kinross (8pm), and Wanderers II v St Andrews University (9pm).
