Investigative work

-

Our colleagues on The People’s Friend have been busy with some investigative work on the transfers which featured in the column last week.

They discovered that the originals were first mentioned in the magazine

dated March 9, 1935. A piece says: “Next week there will be presented with every copy of the ‘Friend’ a supplement consisting of a booklet of transfers.

“By means of these a wide variety of articles – cushions, table-runners, tea cosies, luncheon-sets, towels, pictures and underwear – can be sewed and ornamented.

“My lady friends will treasure the supplement and will turn with interest to the competition which ‘Eleanor’ is arranging.”

The competition referred to ran the following week and took the form of a Grand Embroidery competition with the first prize being a solid silver tea service.
