Different types of crossing
Zebra – black and white striped road between a pair of flashing amber beacons (Belisha beacons). Drivers must give way to any pedestrians who are waiting to cross. Pelican (Pedestrian Light Controlled Crossing) – controlled by traffic lights. Drivers can go through if the light is green, even if pedestrians are waiting to cross but must give way when flashing amber or red. Puffin (Pedestrian User-Friendly Intelligent crossings) – the same as a pelican crossing but the lights are controlled by sensors which detect if there are pedestrians on the crossing. Toucan (Two-Can Cross) – the same as a pelican crossing but wider for pedestrians and cyclists (who can cycle across rather than dismounting and crossing as they must do on other crossings). Pegasus – the same as a pelican crossing but with a high-level push button for horse riders so they do not have to dismount. Chicken – not really. It would be a decent gag for a town planner though.
