By them an attempt was made at an Appeal Tribunal in Dundee to set up a standard of manpower for the farms. From the Bench intimation was made that every case would be considered on its merits. Out of 54 cases heard, the army got 26 men. Some farms were considered to be improperly staffed in that too great a number of men were of military age.

A Tealing family missed the fright of their lives by minutes when a petrol tanker went out of control. The vehicle careered into their home in the village on Dundee’s northern perimeter. Miraculously, there was only one minor injury – to the driver – in the teatime crash on the Tealing-Auchterhouse road. The driver, Ernest Johnston, from Brechin sustained a cut head. His cab, however, was badly damaged by the impact. Sunnyview Cottage belongs to Jim and Frances Stewart, who were on their way home.

A memorial to one of the first Black Watch soldiers killed in Iraq was unveiled in Perth. Marc Ferns, 21, from Glenrothes died following an improvised bomb attack in the city of Basra on August 12 2004. Last year his family raised more than £5,000 for the Black Watch Association to mark the 10th anniversary of his loss. While the majority will be used to help veterans and their families, some was used to erect a signpost within the grounds of the Black Watch Castle and Museum.
