City punish Montrose to claim first victory

-

Edinburgh City celebrated their history-making first league win since joining the SPFL as Montrose boss Paul Hegarty was left with the realisation that it is goals that count.

Hegarty said: “We had the majority of the game but couldn’t convert our chances and were punished.

“Our keeper Allan Fleming was redundant for long spells, then an incident in our box gave them a penalty.

“We might have had one ourselves at the other end.

“Our home record speaks volumes for our position in the league. Last year Links Park was a bit of a fortress and we won plenty of games, but this season we can’t buy a win.

“We need to take our chances and score goals to take the pressure off.

“Edinburgh have improved and play to a system that suits them. Goals change games and the bottom line is that they won.”

Montrose made the early running and Graham Webster was tackled on the point of shooting, then Johnny Court forced a save from keeper Andrew Stobie.

On 36 minutes Webster fired in another shot which tested Stobie.

City had their only chance of the first half three minutes from the break when Ousman See shot narrowly wide.

The visitors grabbed the lead on 65 minutes in controversial fashion. Slackness in defence let Ross Allum break into the box and he was adjudged to have been fouled by Gregor Anderson. Douglas Gair scored from the spot.

Four minutes later, a shot from Aaron Dunsmore was saved by Fleming.

Montrose made a couple of substitutions and tried to save the game and six minutes from time a curling effort from Webster dipped just over.

The last chance came a minute from time when Ross Campbell had a header saved from a Terry Masson corner.
