Mrs Pankhurst, who headed a deputation to Viscount Grey, attempted to enter the Lobby of the House of Lords but was ejected and the deputation was told that Viscount Grey would not be in the House of Lords that day. More than 300 people escaped down firemen’s ladders from the first-floor windows of Bournemouth’s biggest department store after a rocket had gone off in the fireworks section. As smoke from the blaze billowed through the store packed with shoppers, elderly women, children and staff clambered through the windows to reach the brigade ladders. About 15 people, including children, were taken to hospital. Many were cut by broken glass but they were not detained.

The Liberal Democrats scored a spectacular victory in the Kincardine and Deeside by-election, taking the seat from the Conservatives. Nicol Stephen overturned a Tory majority of just over 2,000, in the seat previously held by the late Alick Buchanan-Smith, and turned it into a near 8,000 majority of his own. The Liberal Democrats increased their vote by more than 3,000 on a turnout around 10% lower than at the 1987 general election. The Conservatives are now only the third party in Scotland.

Andy Murray knows he must do better against his biggest rivals after a 10th defeat in 11 matches to Novak Djokovic in the Paris Masters final. A 6-2 6-4 victory for the world No 1 gave him his third successive trophy and the 10th title of the season. Murray ended a run of eight losses to Djokovic in Montreal this summer, but was beaten in the semi-finals in Shanghai last month – and it was a similar story in France. His record against Djokovic now stands at nine wins from 30 meetings.
