Games crowds soar and records tumble
Highland games chiefs have hailed the success of a 2016 season which saw records topple and international interest rocket at events across Scotland.
The achievements of competitors in the traditional spectacle was marked at the annual Scottish Highland Games Association (SHGA) awards dinner in Fife, where the body’s chairman praised the dedication of athletes in contributing to the “success and vibrancy” of the circuit.
SHGA president Charlie Murray, from Forfar also praised the volunteers whose efforts have ensured the nationwide games programme continues to thrive after a spell which saw some long-standing events go to the wall.
“Once again, we have witnessed close competition and displays of strength, stamina and skill during the highland games season,” said Mr Murray.
“The continued success and vibrancy of our Highland games circuit is testament to all those who volunteer their time and energy to ensure events are staged throughout the country.
“Each event contributes greatly to its local economy and individual event partners and sponsors play a significant part in achieving this.”
The SHGA oversees 60 of the 80 games that are held across the country each year and administers a series of regional leagues and national and international Highland games championships.
