Captain Jansen and the crew of the three-masted Swedish barque Talisman were yesterday rescued by the coastguard­s at Easthaven after the vessel had been buffeted by the gale for three days. The barque was bound from Helsingbor­d, Sweden. to Newcastle with a cargo ot pitprops and had almost reached Shields when she was caught by the gale and driven along the Scottish coast as the rudder was lost. She was entirely at the mercy of the gale. The residents of Easthaven offered hospitalit­y to the men.

Former world fly-weight boxing champion Jackie Paterson was stabbed to death in a fight in South Africa on Saturday night. He was 46. Police in Durban said yesterday that the Scots-born boxer was stabbed at the holiday resort of Amanzimtot­i, on the coast of Natal. His jugular vein was pierced by a piece of broken glass and he bled to death. Paterson won the world flyweight title in London in June 1943 when he knocked out Peter Kane in the first round, and lost it in Belfast in 1948 to Rinty Monaghan.

The strangers who sent Terry Waite the postcard which brought a ray of hope during his ordeal were revealed. As the Church of England envoy spent his first day of freedom with his family at RAF Lyneham, Joy and Graham Brodier said they were overjoyed their “little effort” had made such a difference. The couple addressed their card, depicting a stained glass picture of author and preacher John Bunyan in a prison cell, simply to: Terry Waite, c/o Hizbollah, Party of God, Beirut, Lebanon.

A toddler who died suddenly will have her name in the clouds after hundreds of thousands of people backed a campaign to honour her. Two-year-old Edie Murphy’s parents said she would have been delighted to see her name on the side of a holiday firm’s new Boeing 787. Almost 136,000 votes were cast from around the world for the Fly High Edie campaign, launched a fortnight after the two-year-old from Kirkcaldy died in hospital. Edie’s parents, Tom and Cheryl spoke of their delight.
