Carrick keeps faith while boss fumes

PREMIER LEAGUE: Mourinho claims United are unlucky

- SIMON PEACH

Michael Carrick has no doubt that results will soon start going Manchester United’s way after again failing to turn Old Trafford dominance into victory.

Juan Mata gave the hosts a lead that substitute Olivier Giroud cancelled out with an 89th minute header to earn Arsenal a 1-1 draw.

It was the Gunners’ only attempt on target and meant United stuttered to a third straight league draw on home turf for the first time since 1992, having wasted the chance to win all of those matches.

Mourinho was incensed earlier in the match when he felt his side should have been given a penalty when Nacho Monreal hauled down Antonio Valencia, referee Andre Marriner waving play on.

The United manager claims his side are the unluckiest in the league.

Carrick, captaining the side with Wayne Rooney starting on the bench, believes United are not far off from things turning.

“I don’t really see problems we need to solve. I think, of course, the results aren’t (ideal) and that’s the major thing, but playing like that, more often than not we are going to win games,” he told MUTV.

The draw left United in sixth place, six points behind fourth-placed Arsenal.

Manchester City briefly moved level on points with leaders Liverpool – before Chelsea’s win yesterday earned them top spot – after Yaya Toure netted twice in a 2-1 win at Crystal Palace.

Liverpool dropped points in a frustrating goalless draw at Southampton, where Roberto Firmino missed a great chance in the second half, stabbing wide from 10 yards.

Sunderland collected a second straight league win to move off the bottom of the table with a 3-0 victory over fellow strugglers Hull at the Stadium of Light, in a match which was briefly delayed by floodlight failure

Swansea replaced Sunderland at the foot of the table after a late goal from Seamus Coleman gave Everton a 1-1 draw at Goodison Park.

Champions Leicester slumped to a 2-1 defeat at Watford.
