Big Noise certain to bring big benefits
Confirmation of Sistema’s imminent arrival in Courier Country is good news indeed.
Just a few short years ago, anyone suggesting young lives could be completely transformed by the power of music would have had a job on their hands to attract funding and public support.
However, all that has changed in recent years thanks to the incredible success of Sistema and its “Big Noise Orchestra”.
The charity first made waves in the deprived Raploch area of Stirling.
Since then it has expanded into a number of other areas, with Douglas in Dundee among the latest beneficiaries.
The charity has lofty ambitions, talking of a “mission to create permanent social change” in some of the most challenging environments.
Almost 500 young people engage with the Raploch project, while the Big Noise scheme in the Govanhill area of Glasgow works with almost 800 children.
The transformative impact of Sistema in this country – based on the El Sistema movement established in Venezuela – is now beyond doubt, with some quite remarkable tales of success.
Helping our young people to fulfil their potential is a key responsibility for us all.
There is no doubt the Big Noise Orchestra will have a hugely positive impact in Dundee.
