Clayton Restaurant, Dairsie, Fife

What is it? The restaurant at Clayton Caravan Park is open to the public. It is a big draw for families with young children thanks to the soft play facilities for children up to eight and a large playground on site.

First impressions? A large, comfortable restaurant with a separate room housing a small soft play area, this space is busy and noisy, as you might expect but the rest of the restaurant is more peaceful.

What did you have? Mum had a chicken burger with chips and coleslaw (£9.50). The kids opted for macaroni cheese and fish and chips (£4.25 each). The total for food plus soft drinks was £23.

Much of a wait? The drinks came reasonably quickly but the food took a little longer and despite the fact that the children were busy in the play area, they did ask where their food was. We had to ask a couple of times for the glasses of water we had ordered.

How was the food? The quality of the food was great but we had to send the fish and chips back so they could add a forgotten portion of peas. The macaroni was cheesy and delicious and came with chips, so amounted to a hearty portion. The fish and chips were declared yummy and the chicken burger was two generous fillets of chicken served in a bun with excellent chunky chips and tasty coleslaw.

Good for Children? The children loved it – they were able to run around and play without disturbing anyone. If you find it too distracting or noisy to sit beside the play area you could eat in the main restaurant. There is also a great playground outside. There are lots of high chairs, easy access for prams and good baby changing facilities.

Good for the rest of the family? Yes, the restaurant is spacious and comfortable and the food is tasty and freshly prepared. There is wheelchair access and accessible toilet facilities. Gluten-free options are available.

Would you go back? Yes – the kids thought it was great. The only thing that let our visit down was a few niggles with the service but that could perhaps be put down to it being a busy lunchtime during the school holidays. Score: 4/5
