Boost for Spurs as Kane extends stay

Striker signs new deal to stay at White Hart Lane until 2022

Mauricio Pochettino believes Harry Kane has given Tottenham’s players a huge boost by signing a new contract.

Kane’s new deal will run until 2022 and extends his stay at White Hart Lane by a further two years.

The striker had been in talks with Spurs since the summer about a pay rise that would bring him closer to counterparts at other top Premier League clubs.

It is understood Kane will now collect a basic wage of around £80,000 a week to put him on a par with Hugo Lloris, the team’s captain and now joint-highest earner.

It ensures the deal does not break Tottenham’s strict wage structure but Kane will receive a number of performance-related bonuses which, if activated, will see him move close to the £120,000 a week mark.

The 23-year-old had previously earned around £50,000 a week.

Kane has only recently returned from a seven-week lay-off with an ankle injury but Tottenham are struggling for form, having won only once in their last 10 matches.

Pochettino feels Kane’s announcement will give the whole club a lift.

“The news is very good for the dressing room and all the fans and the club, and for him,” Pochettino said.

“It’s great news. We feel very happy all because one more time he is showing commitment to club and the project and that’s great for us.”

Kane is the latest in a long line of Tottenham players to sign new contracts this year, following the likes of Dele Alli, Christian Eriksen and Eric Dier.

Spurs also want Lloris, whose contract expires in 2019, to agree fresh terms, while Jan Vertonghen has held talks about extending his deal.
