Johnny 9epp tops list of stars losing the numbers game
George Clooney also among actors not bringing in enough at box office, says Forbes magazine
Johnny Depp is Hollywood’s most overpaid actor for the second year in row, according to Forbes.
The Pirates Of The Caribbean star topped the list following his box office flop Alice Through The Looking Glass, the magazine said.
The Disney sequel hit cinemas at the same time Depp’s high-profile divorce from Amber Heard was announced, amid allegations of domestic abuse.
Depp brought in just 2.80 US dollars at the box office for every dollar he was paid for his last three films before June, Forbes said.
The magazine discounted animated films from the list, as well as movies where actors had an insignificant role or where they were released in fewer than 2,000 cinemas.
Alice Through the Looking Glass grossed only 77 million dollars in the US domestically and 300 million dollars worldwide, against a production budget of 170 million dollars, according to Box Office Mojo.
Depp also suffered poor box office returns with the 2015 comedy Mortdecai and his 2014 film Transcendence, Forbes said.
Will Smith ranked second on the Forbes list, returning just five dollars for every dollar he earned following the release of Concussion and Focus.
Channing Tatum came in third following the 2015 flop Jupiter Ascending, leaving him with six dollars earned at the box office for every dollar he was paid.
Comic actor Will Ferrell was fourth with 6.50 dollars brought in for every dollar he earned, while George Clooney was fifth, returning 6.70 dollars at the box office for every dollar he was paid. Leonardo DiCaprio, Julia Roberts and Bradley Cooper also feature in the top 10.
Depp is set to appear in another bigbudget film, Pirates Of The Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales, due out in May.
