Courier Sport understands that Barry Smith is set to be named as the new boss of East Fife.

The League 1 outfit have been looking for a manager since Gary Naysmith accepted the Queen of the South job last week.

Now, East Fife are edging closer to opting for Smith to take over at New Bayview, with his appointment set to be rubber stamped by the full board of directors over the weekend and a formal announcement made at the start of next week.

The 42-year-old’s last managerial job was with English outfit Aldershot Town, but he left the club in April to be closer to his family back in Scotland.

Smith memorably helped Dundee stay up in the First Division after they were deducted 25 points for entering administration for the second time in 2010.

The Dark Blues parted company with the man who had also served the club with distinction as a player in February 2013, with Dundee struggling after their late replacement of Rangers in the top flight at the start of that season.

Smith subsequently worked as a youth coach at Ross County before managing Alloa.

He left the Wasps in March, 2015 and then took over at Aldershot a month later.

Now, Smith will take the helm at East Fife who are currently second bottom of the League 1 table.
