Black Watch move would be welcomed

-

During the prolonged consultation period which led to the removal of the RAF from Leuchars in Fife, then MP Menzies Campbell was a vocal supporter of the campaign to retain the air force locally.

The RAF was, he said on many more than one occasion, in “the right place, doing the right job at the right time.” Many locals agreed with him and fought a spirited battle. Ultimately, of course, their campaign failed and 100 years of aviation history at Leuchars came to a sad end. The decision is still mourned in the area.

However, the site would not, we were promised, be left to rot.

The army would soon move in, defence chiefs said, ensuring a bright and vibrant future.

The Royal Scots Dragoon Guards did indeed move in but hopes are high a fresh expansion could now be on the cards.

There are even suggestions The Black Watch could move in.

Such a development would surely receive a massively warm welcome. Fife and Tayside is, after all, the traditional heartland of the famous old regiment and this area has done more than most to supply recruits eager to pull on the red hackle.

The history of The Black Watch and that of current Leuchars incumbents the Scots Dragoon Guards is also closely intertwined. It all makes sense.

It is to be hoped the MoD is standing to attention.
