Lord Davenport, the Food Controller, issues the following important appeal to the public: “The necessity for some curtailment of the nation’s food consumption is urgent. An amount sufficient for each individual requires in consequence to be stated. The quantity indicated as being sufficient has been arrived at in no haphazard fashion. The three most important daily staples are bread, meat and sugar and the consumption of these varies according to age, sex and occupation.”

An eight-year-old Dundee girl had to endure a nightmare ordeal in Camperdown Park yesterday when she was chased for almost a mile in darkness by a masked man. Her flight of terror began in the car park outside the park’s Wildlife Centre, where she was sitting alone in a car at about 5pm, left by relatives for only a few moments. The man approached and frightened the girl so much that she left the car and ran. She was able to reach a populated area and the man gave up the chase.

The repair bill for a collapsed Perthshire bridge could top £1 million. The estimate was revealed as local authorities count the cost of the devastating storms that have lashed the country in the last few months. The crossing over the Black Water at Bleaton Hallet was ripped from its foundations at the end of the year. The structure near Bridge of Cally provides a vital link between the A93 and Alyth. Perth and Kinross Council now plans to remove the 82ft deck and replace it with a new crossing.
