Menzieshill chase top prize

Tomorrow sees the conclusion of the indoor season with Grove Menzieshill and Dundee Wanderers both involved, writes our men’s hockey correspondent.

Menzieshill are aiming for the top prize, the first division title and a place in Europe next year.

That seemed some way off as they made a relatively poor start to the season but they came through last weekend, inflicting a first defeat on Kelburne to now face Inverleith in the final.

Both semi-finals were closely contested and the final is likely to be similar as Inverleith have recently ousted Menzieshill as Scottish representatives.

The Dundee side will be keen to reclaim that honour but to do so they may have to rely on their more experienced players as they did in the semi-final.

Wanderers have already claimed promotion from division 2. They play Menzieshill II to determine the title but second teams are not permitted in Division 1 and so Wanderers, protecting a 100% record, are already there.

The second promotion place will be determined when Western Wildcats, seventh in division 1, face the winner of Watsonians against Edinburgh University, third in division 2, but the second team eligible for promotion.

Menzieshill III have won Regional B, the Midland/North option, and so meet Hillhead II, winners of Regional A. The winners will be promoted to division 3 with Clydesdale II relegated.

Wanderers II won promotion from division 3, taking the title by two points from Inverleith II. The Edinburgh side now face Perthshire, who finished seventh in division 2, for a place in that division next season. Weekend fixtures: Tomorrow, National Indoor League Gala Day at Bells Main Hall.

Division 1, 3/4 place: 3pm Kelburne Bromac v Grange;

Div 1/2 play-off: 4pm Western Wildcats v winner of Watsonians v Edinburgh University; 1/2

place: 6pm Grove Menzieshill v Inverleith.
