Stirling County Council had under consideration a communication in reference to the Summer Time Act. Mr John Edmond of Gallamuir said that at the beginning of the season the Act worked well enough but, in August and September, so far as farmers were concerned, the Act did not work well at all. No matter where they put the hands of the clock the dew would not lift until the sun came round and at harvest the best hours of the day were lost. Police are searching for six pairs of ladies’ bloomers which fell from an aircraft over Kent. A spokesman said: “It seems that part of the cargo of the plane was blown out of a window while it was flying over Maidstone. We are treating it as a normal case of lost property.” The bloomers were for a boutique in Chelsea. Owner Phillip Hillman said: “The bloomers are part of six sets of mini-dresses and bloomers which go together. The dresses are so short that they cannot be decently worn without bloomers.”

The Royal Society for the Protection of Birds believes that illegal killing of buzzards is threatening the bird in its attempt to recolonise north-east Scotland’s coastal plain. The problem is widespread in parts of Grampian, say the society. In a recent incident, a buzzard was shot and seriously injured near Inverbervie. An Aberdeenshire vet managed to nurse the bird back to health and it was released on the RSPB’s Loch of Strathbeg nature reserve, where it has made a full recovery.

Work to turn a disused library into a top cultural venue has started more than three years after the idea was first put on the table. Builders moved into the Strathearn Artspace in Crieff after the charity behind the venture bought the building from Perth and Kinross Council for £75,000. The group had leased the former Comrie Street library for the previous two years, but the purchase will allow them to make major changes to the property, such as adding a mezzanine level and a stair lift.
