Tannadice defender signs two-year deal
Securing defensive rock William Edjenguele on a new contract is the start of Dundee United manager Ray McKinnon’s “rebuilding process”, writes Eric Nicolson.
The experienced French centre-back has signed a two-year extension.
Edjenguele will be many United fans’ choice for player of the season and McKinnon described the news as a “marvellous boost” for the club as they seek to bounce back from Friday night’s defeat to Hibs and clinch promotion.
The weekend results have seen United drop back to fourth place in the Championship table.
They have the chance to jump back ahead of Morton into third, however, if they can beat St Mirren tomorrow night.
A win in Paisley would also keep alive fading hopes of topping the league and clinching automatic promotion by trimming the gap to Hibs to seven points.
“We are very excited to keep a player and team-mate like William in tangerine,” McKinnon said.
“This is a marvellous boost ahead of the run-in to the season’s end.
“William has impressed with his performance levels and durability, and we believe he is a significant fit within our plans to continually progress this club.
“He is a fantastic pro who is an asset to the team on the pitch and the dressing room and this is the start of my rebuilding process.”
Edjenguele has made 26 appearances for United, scoring two goals.
The 29-year-old Frenchman joined in the summer, after playing for a number of clubs, including Bury, Coventry City, Le Mans and Neuchatel Xamax.
