Scotland’s baby names revealed... surprising­ly, only one Blu-Tygar

records: List of names given to children in 2016 also includes Alba and Indie

Last year 10 girls were given the same first name as the First Minister Nicola Sturgeon, with two being given the name of the Prime Minister Theresa May.

Alba, the Gaelic for Scotland, was the name given to 42 girls who were born in 2016, according to data from the National Records of Scotland.

It published a list of every first name given to children born in 2016, with this showing 20 girls were named Indie along with three called Indy and another four with the name Indi.

A number of parents appear to have taken inspiratio­n from places across the globe when naming their offspring, with one girl called Boston, another called Vegas, one Denver, one Paris, two Rio and 16 called Paisley.

Other parents seemed to turn to famous musicians when considerin­g baby names, with one boy called Elvis and another little boy called Bowie born in 2016, while there were two boys named Ziggy.

Another boy was named Sheeran, possibly suggesting his parents are fans of chart topper Ed Sheeran.

One girl was called Winter but there were 22 Autumns and 56 Summers born in 2016.

Other names chosen by parents of girls include Adorabelle, Apple, Beau-Bear, Blu-Tygar, Brie – which was the name given to two newborns – Cerise, Chanel, Dior, Empress, Precious, Velvet and Y.

More unusual names for boys included Alpha, Archer, Boon, Diamond, Fountain, Harley-Davidson, Maverick, Oak and Pride.

A number of boys were also given animal names, with two youngsters called Bear, one called Fox and another named Wolf.
