Theatre work reaches milestone

-

The £16.5 million transformation of Perth Theatre will reach another milestone this week.

Roads around the venue will be closed for two days as a new air handling system is craned into position on the extension’s roof.

Once in place, the roof will be completed and the internal fit can take place throughout the building.

To ensure the work is carried out safely, Mill Street will be completely closed to traffic tomorrow and Wednesday.

A Perth and Kinross Council spokeswoman said when the road is re-opened a one-way system will be put in place from Kinnoull Street to George Street to allow ongoing works further down Mill Street.

“Drivers are reminded that they should not pick-up or dropoff outwith the marked bays on Mill Street itself, as there is a ‘no waiting’ restriction in operation in this area,” she said.

Access to the car park next to Marks & Spencers will be suspended tomorrow, although pedestrian access will be maintained along a new footpath on the Premier Inn side of the street.

“The project has been planned to ensure access to local businesses has been maintained throughout,” said the council’s spokeswoman. “We would like to thank residents, businesses and visitors for their patience.”

The venue is scheduled to open later this year with a restored auditorium and new 200-seater studio theatre.
