As The Courier Community Kindness Campaign comes to an end, let’s remember that simple acts of friendship and kindness are something we can all do, every day of the year. By Caroline Lindsay

Over the last few weeks, we have been highlighting local groups and individuals who help those who are lonely and isolated.

If you’d like to join in, simply cut out the coupon below for a free copy of today’s paper, claim your free paper and then take it round to someone in your community you know is on their own.

At the same time, you can take the opportunity to ask if they’re OK and if there’s anything you can do to lend a helping hand.

Age Scotland will be holding its national conference at Perth Concert Hall on Wednesday and simple of acts of extraordinary kindness will be at the forefront of the day’s agenda.

Keith Robson, the charity’s chief executive, says: “I recently heard a story about a 17-year-old who helps several older people in his local area, cooking them food, doing the shopping, buying clothes and doing the ironing.

“It really struck a chord and reminded me of the importance of The Courier’s Community Kindness Campaign.”

Carrying out small acts of compassion doesn’t just benefit the recipient – it can help the giver too.

“One volunteer befriender told us it helps to remind her what’s important in life,” says Keith.

“She is reminded every week of the importance of simple human contact and the stresses of the day disappear.”

Keith stresses that visiting for a cuppa or even saying hello can make the world of difference for someone who is gripped by loneliness.

The Courier Community Kindness Campaign has also won the backing of the Perth-based well-being charity PKAVS.

“The campaign is in line with what we do — anything that brings people together is good,” said chief executive Paul Graham. “The Courier is a community paper and we are a community service. The newspaper is a useful resource for information about the local community.”

And let’s remember it’s not just elderly people who are at risk – isolation can affect people of any age. And we all have the power to help.
