Time to get behind Bain, says former stopper

-

Derek Soutar last night urged Dundee fans to lay-off departing keeper Scott Bain – and insists he’ll give his lot for as long as he’s at the club.

Bain came in for some stick from the Dens Park faithful during Friday night’s humiliating 7-0 thrashing at the hands of Aberdeen after it was revealed earlier in the week the 25-year-old would not be signing a new deal.

Bain is contracted on Tayside until the summer of 2018 but has knocked back the offer of a new contract so could leave as early as this summer.

He experienced every keeper’s worst nightmare as the rampant Dons wreaked havoc on his goal and exDundee and Pittodrie keeper Soutar says the Dundee faithful should go easy on their current number one.

Soutar said: “I feel for Bainy especially. It’s a disaster for any keeper to lose seven goals especially having announced a day or so before he would be leaving.

“He’ll be hurting more than most.

“But Dundee fans need to get behind him because there’s nobody who’ll be hurting more and desperate to turn things round than Scott.

“I know he’ll be aiming to keep a clean sheet up at Ross County on Tuesday night and will be trying even more to make sure Dundee have a positive end to the season.

“Scott obviously has ambitions but as long as he’s at Dens he’ll be giving 100% effort and commitment as ever.”

And Soutar appealed to the Dundee support to stick with their under-fire favourites as they hover ominously above the play-off spot.

He added: “I could understand the fans’ frustration on Friday night as some of them walked out at half-time when the scoreline was 4-0.

“But the players need them to be on their side.

“This is a crucial next few weeks coming up when they can’t afford any splits within the camp. They all need to pull together for the sake of the club.”
