So-called spring fashions leave me as cold as winter

There seems to be a huge conspiracy going on in the world of fashion.

Women are being urged to wear the “new” florals and stripes – all at the same time, in ever more clashing combinations.

This does not take into consideration the fact that anyone over the age of 22 dressing like this looks completely barking.

Much as I believe we should all wear what we want at any age, I have to admit that I tend to opt for the safer option rather than anything edgy these days. My goal is generally to go about my business without people pointing and laughing or small children crying when they see me.

This is a shame at this time of year, which is of course traditionally when we bring out the bright clothes in celebration of spring.

I shall be sticking to sombre and dark – particularly for the Easter bonnet.

This is appropriate as I feel I am missing out on any strength of feeling about this particular celebration.

Many people have said to me they prefer Easter to Christmas (better weather and more chocolate), some have said it’s too over-the-top these days (people decorating their houses and gardens to mark the occasion) and of course for many it has a huge religious significance.

For me, I just find it a bit... meh. I fear this may have something to do with the contrast between Easter now and when I was a child.

Nowadays, there is so much indulgence all year round, whereas in the olden days we saw it as a rare chance for treats.

Not just in chocolate form either – I remember having hot cross buns once a year as an Easter treat in the olden days, none of this available for months before and after business we get now.

As Easter fashions now extend to our homes, I am also fairly wary of the increasing trends to decorate for Easter. I love a bunny bauble and a bunch of daffs as much as the next person but in moderation.

Who knows though, come the weekend I may be on a chocolate high and stringing pastel egg bunting all over the house and garden in a last-ditch attempt to follow fashion.
