One more win could see Buddies win battle

-

St Mirren’s points and goal difference advantage over Ayr United could see the Paisley side safe from automatic relegation with a win over hosts Dundee United – however, despite their near eight-month stay in bottom spot they are not looking to mark this potential milestone.

Buddies assistant manager James Fowler said: “There are four teams fighting to get out of things and some of them play each other so we have not looked at the various permutations.

“All we are concentrating on is winning games. If we do that then we will be alright so there is no point in considering what-ifs.”

The Saints blew the lead twice at Falkirk last weekend as the Bairns hit back to draw 2-2. However, Fowler and manager Jack Ross are looking at things positively.

Fowler explained: “You could go on about being disappointed at not winning but we have gone to Morton and Falkirk in our last two games and picked up four points. They are both chasing second place and are both good sides at home so it was actually a very good week for us.”

“Dundee United are as strong as those two sides, so we can be confident of picking something up if we play like we can.”

Meanwhile Morton can book their play-off place with a win over bottom side Ayr United in a game that manager Jim Duffy will watch from the stand.

The Cappielow boss is beginning his two-game punishment that was handed out at Hampden on Thursday for his part in the clash with Hibs boss Neil Lennon at the end of last month.

Duffy said: “The disciplinary meeting was less than pleasant but you just have to get on with things. I wanted the whole thing over and done with and it is now. I will be watching this one from the stand which is a first for me.”
