Wilson pledge on next Old Firm clash

-

Danny Wilson has promised Rangers supporters his side will not make the same mistakes they made at Hampden when Celtic visit Ibrox on Saturday.

Rangers were well off the pace in the 2-0 William Hill Scottish Cup semi-final defeat.

Defender Wilson says the loss – their fourth from five Old Firm clashes this season – was self-inflicted, with the Light Blues guilty of failing to get in the faces of Brendan Rodgers’ men.

But the former Hearts skipper insists Rangers will be up for the fight when they host the Hoops at the weekend.

“It’s important we lift ourselves,” said Wilson. “We’re at home, we’ll go out and give everything we’ve got.

“There wasn’t a lack of effort on Sunday. We did try; we were just too far off them and gave them too much respect at times.

“Next Saturday we’ll go in with a game plan, and hopefully we can carry it out better than we did at Hampden,” he said.

“What frustrates the most is the fact we just didn’t get going at all.

“We gave them far too much time on the ball and, when you do that to a quality team, they are going to punish you. That’s what we found.

“The way we set up was to try to frustrate them and then hit on the counter.

“But I think we ended up giving them too much time and too much space.

“We tried to make changes at halftime, but the penalty five minutes into the second half kills the game.

“We had a go at the end but it was too little, too late at that point. It’s easy to play when you’re 2-0 down. We had to show more before that but unfortunately for ourselves we didn’t do that.

“We need to try and move on from it as quickly as possible. We’re really disappointed not to get to the final but I don’t think we can have too many complaints after the 90 minutes that we didn’t go through.”

Meanwhile, Myles Beerman may not realise it yet, but he will one day be grateful for the Hampden torment he suffered at the feet of Patrick Roberts, according to Rangers youth boss Graeme Murty.

The Ibrox teenager endured a torrid first 45 minutes as he made his Old Firm debut on Sunday, with Roberts turning him inside out.

Beerman was lucky not to be sent off just before half-time after catching the on-loan Manchester City wideman twice in quick succession, but settled down after the break.

And, while he was left feeling low as his side lost out to their Parkhead rivals, former Gers caretaker boss Murty reckons it could yet prove to be a crucial experience for the Malta Under-21 international as he looks to make his recent first-team breakthrough permanent.

“He has learned a great deal that he doesn’t even realise yet,” said Murty.
