Monikie fishing well

-

Despite the cold, windy weather,

MONIKIE continued to fish very well last week with 85 anglers taking over 530 fish including those returned.

Only one boat ventured out on Crombie but the two anglers had a good day with over 20 browns caught and returned.

A number of good fish were again caught last week, including Frank Chalmers with a 4lb 2oz rainbow off the Island. Midge tip lines or floaters with, cormorants, pheasant tail, traffic light buzzers, crunchers, snatchers and black hoppers or emergers, were taking fish, while in the colder, bright days the fish went down but could be contacted with the same mix of buzzers fished on a fast glass line.

The first evening session of the season on Saturday produced four fish for 8lb, plus nine returned, for the only boat out and the bailiff.

On Monday, while again very cold and with a strong, blustery wind, the two boats out took 12 fish and the bailiff boat kept two and returned 11, mainly fishing PT buzzer with a red rib and black cormorant on sink tip or fast glass lines.

The first rod draw of the season, sponsored by Angus Angling in Forfar, was won by E Seaward of Arbroath and the first draw for the box of flies, donated by Willie Thomson, was won by M Roy of Monifieth.

Some of the noted catches included: J Strachan, day boat on the Island, five fish for 9lb 8oz plus six returned; I Reid and I Cameron, day boat on the Island, 10 fish for 19lb 3oz; K Prior and J Armstrong, day boat on Crombie, taking three browns for 2lb 11oz plus 24 browns returned; J Thomson and J Westland, day boat on the Island, 10 fish for 23lb 3oz plus two returned; I Crichton and J Stewart, day boat on the Island, 10 fish for 21lb 9oz; L Irvine, day boat on the North, five fish for 11lb 4oz; W Milne and D Roy, day boat on the Island, one for 2lb plus 13 returned.

CARLOGIE DAM has been fishing extremely well with anglers complementing the great fighting fish on offer.

A mixture of blues, rainbows and brown trout have been taken mainly on buzzers and dries.

The tagged fish competition, which includes small blue trout under 1lb 4oz, has gained six lucky anglers £25 over the last couple of weeks.

Carlogie will be open 9am to 9pm for the month of May.

As usual in April, the weather plays a big factor in determining the fortunes of anglers, and this was particularly the case over the last week on LOCH LEVEN.

Some encouraging catches have been recorded though.

Two young anglers were out on Saturday and had six good fish, all on buzzers in the Hole o’ the Inch. They kept two, one weighing just over 3lb and the other just under.

Alan Smith had four trout on buzzers in the same area of the loch while Brian Mackenzie and Peter Cameron had three between them, two of those caught pulling small lures.

Stuart Moodie had a very nice trout on a pulled fly estimated at 3½lb.

Pike fishing is also showing signs of picking up over recent days.

One boat had four on Saturday with the largest estimated at 6lb, while another boat on the same day had two both weighing in at around the 11lb mark.

The pike made their appearance along the Kirkgate Bank mid to late afternoon on Saturday when the conditions ‘fined down’ a little.
