University archive reveals colourful characters
Fraudsters, forgers, thieves and body snatchers – a new archive has revealed the scoundrels who studied at Scotland’s first university.
Founded in 1413, St Andrews University has educated royalty, politicians, church leaders and athletes.
Celebrated alumi include Prince William, his wife Kate, and former First Minister Alex Salmond.
The university has created a searchable database which gives an insight into some of the ne’er-do-wells who were there between the 18th and 19th centuries.
The Biographical Register holds details of almost 12,000 students and staff, including three body-snatchers
