100 years ago

By a Public Meals Order, No. 2, 1917, issued last night, the Food Controller abolishes the meatless day in hotels, restaurant­s, clubs, etc, and the meat allowance per week for consumptio­n in places of public eating is increased accordingl­y. One of the clauses of the Order defines the percentage of flour and sugar to be reckoned in cakes, buns, scones, biscuits, macaroni and other like articles, when it is not otherwise brought into account, and also barley flour, barley meal, or maize flour.

50 years ago

The band was ready – conductor Douglas Bell had his baton poised – and then 25 voices rang out as one with the familiar strains of Happy Birthday at Wood cot Hospital, Stonehaven, yesterday. This was Aberdeen City Silver Band’s Way of greeting a grand old Stonehaven lady and mother of two band members, Mrs Jane Mackie, who was celebratin­g her 82nd birthday. Once a cook at the hospital at which she is now a patient, Mrs Mackie could not hold back her emotions.

The sunshine brought smiles to scores of Scots yesterday as the weather sprung into summer. Temperatur­es shot into the 80s in some areas, although there wasn’t so much to laugh about near the coast in Tayside and Fife where it was a case of “haar, haar.” Scotland saw the best of the temperatur­es with Edinburgh the hottest spot in Britain at 29C (84F). In the northeast, Inverness had its highest May temperatur­e on record with 26C (80F), and at RAF Kinloss at 2pm it was 28C (82F).

Developers behind a billion-pound Perth expansion plan have pledged to protect an ancient forest on the edge of the site. The 3,000-homeBertha Park project was approved by councillor­s this week. But Alistair Godfrey of Luncarty, Redgorton and Moneydie Community Council, has raised concerns about an ancient woodland to the north of the site. Mr Godfrey said the some of the trees date back to the 19th Century, making it one of the oldest of its kind in Scotland, and should be safeguarde­d.
