Famous residents

-

“Regarding the recent picture of The Manse which appeared in the column,” says reader Ken MacDougall, “when I saw it, I thought: ‘I know that place.’ And, I was right, as I learned from subsequent columns.

“I spent many lunch times, from 1958 to 1962, in Baxter Park after my ‘lunch’ at Hec’s opposite the school – and the girls could be found in the park.

“When I saw the picture it seemed quite familiar – it was the north-east corner of the junction of Dalkeith Road and Bingham Terrace and a short stretch went up to the gate of Baxter Park.

“Other famous residents around there were the late Ernie Banks, lawyer and Ciano Soave of Hap fame. I gave him a copy of Johnny Will by Pat Boone in 1961 and he played it all the time in the Hap.

“My old art teacher, Frank Henderson, also stayed there. He had a Ford Consul (I think) of gold colour, reg. FMH 55, so he maybe stayed at 55. I’ve got a pretty good memory, but don’t ask me what I had for tea last night!”
