Sadness in his city
“The death of the comedian Will Fyffe at his St Andrews hotel in 1947 rocked the entertainment world and a particular kind of sadness swept through his home city of Dundee,” writes Fraser Elder.
“He was born at No 30 Broughty Ferry Road in 1885 and raised in Cotton Road. A street in the district was later named in his honour.
“In time as an actor he made 23 major films and one of his closest friends was a former Edinburgh church organist named Finlay Currie who himself reached the heights in major Hollywood post-war Biblical epics.
“In total Fyffe recorded 30 songs and his most famous work ‘I Belong to Glasgow’ brought him world-wide stardom and the witty ditty spawned a series of cover versions, notably performed by Danny Kaye, Eartha Kitt and, remarkably, Kirk Douglas!
“In retirement he purchased the Rusacks Marine Hotel in St Andrews and following a major operation for a serious ear ailment, he tragically died in a fall from a top floor window.”
