Bell Street car park security stepped up with plans for CCTV
Security around Dundee’s Bell Street car park will be stepped up in the wake of the publication of a disturbing picture showing a collapsed male drug user.
The man was discovered by a young family lying in a third floor stairwell on Saturday afternoon.
The image sparked debate among members of the public and politicians.
West End councillor Fraser Macpherson said he believes security measures in public places, like Bell Street multi-storey, must be revisited.
Mr Macpherson contacted Dundee City Council to express his concerns, saying: “The fact this man was discovered by a young couple with a baby is very concerning.
“There is a need to look at security in the car park area and I will contact the director of city development in relation to this.
“It’s clearly important that there is sufficient and adequate access to drug rehabilitation programmes.
“But the crucial thing is to also ensure public places are absolutely secured.”
City development director Mike Galloway responded: “Our security staff at West Bell Street MSCP perform regular patrols 24/7, every 1.5 hours, a normal patrol will take circa 60 minutes.
“We plan to supplement this with new CCTV installation in the near future.”
Mr Macpherson added: “I welcome the addition of CCTV as is being proposed for the West Bell Street car park, in addition to the existing regular patrols, to add to the security at the car park.”
