And he was unlucky with a shot that hit the bar as well. “I’m really happy for him.” The win opened up a 12-point gap between the sides and reinforced why one has a Europa League campaign to look forward to and the other a summer of rebuilding and reflection.
For Saints, the result meant this season’s campaign has produced the biggest ever points total in top flight football.
“That’s another little milestone for us, which is pleasing,” said Wright.
“We made changes but the ability to go and win the game was still there to be seen.
“We had many moments in the match when we could have got a second goal.
“Alan Mannus has done well for us and we’ve defended well when we’ve had to, but in the first half I thought we were excellent.
“It’s another good victory and shows we’re without doubt the fourth best team in the league.”
Hearts manager Ian Cathro said: “First half we lacked intensity and real aggression.
“The second half had those things and I don’t think it was a game that in any way we deserved to lose.”
St Johnstone boss Tommy Wright hailed departing star Danny Swanson, who finished his Perth career with a victory and a standing ovation.
The Hibs-bound man, who is suspended for Sunday’s Rangers game, set up Chris Kane’s first half winner against Hearts and left the McDiarmid Park pitch with the home fans showing their appreciation.
And Swanson’s manager also wanted to pay tribute to his contribution to the cause.
Wright said: “That’s his last game and he got a great send off and everybody recognises what he’s done at the club.
“I was actually toying with the idea of not playing him because he’d put in a big shift on Saturday.
“But I’d heard that he wanted to walk out with his kid before the game so I realised how much this meant to him and how much the club means to him.
“Danny has been brilliant for me and he goes with my good wishes.
“Footballers move on all the time but you can still have good memories of places you’ve been.”
Wright also gave special mention to Kane, who hasn’t started or scored since February.
