Angus people who voted Conservative compared to Nazis

- Rob McLaren

The Angus Council candidate who posted extreme pornography on social media has caused another row by compared Conservative voters in Angus to Nazis.

Paul Wright was initially an SNP candidate for the Brechin and Edzell ward last month before it emerged that he posted the two images, which he censored using coffee cups.

He claimed he wanted to demonstrate the character of another user on Twitter, who had previously posted the uncensored images on his feed.

The controversy led to him losing the support of the SNP Party and him standing as an Independent candidate. He failed to be elected.

In the wake of Conservative Kirstene Hair taking the Angus MP seat from the SNP’s Mike Weir, Mr Wright slammed people who voted Tory.

Posting on his Paula Honey Rose Twitter account, he stated: “I am out on the streets of Brechin looking for Tory voters – you are scum and you are devoid of humanity – my grandads fought against you.”

In another tweet he added: “Nazis, fascists, Tories all showing scant regard for human rights and dignity.”

He also stated there would be “loads of Tories coming to Brechin for the Angus show – bear traps ready at every entrance.”

Yesterday Mr Wright defended his posts. He said: “That tweet is a pastiche of numerous tweets by assorted unionists aimed at SNP supporters.

“Anyone with any sense can see that – for anyone to take it seriously is just too funny for words.

“Would you like to see hundreds of tweets comparing SNP voters to Nazis?

“Of course it’s all a joke - possibly bad taste but so what?”

The tweets have been criticised by the Conservative Party which said the language used has “no place whatsoever in politics.” The spokesman added: “Unfortunately, it is all too common on social media.”
