100 years ago

Damage estimated to be in the region of £1,000 was done by fire at the farm of South Mains of Ethie, Inverkeilo­r, tenanted by Mr David W. Morgan. Threshing operations were concluded at the farm on the previous day and the fire originated amongst a large quantity of straw. The Arbroath brigade could not attend and the Dundee brigade was asked to turn out. Within an hour the men were on the scene with powerful motor pumps. There was a plentiful supply of water available.

50 years ago

Sixty senior pupils of Forfar Academy are to take part in a traffic census in the burgh. They will help police officers and members of the planning and roads department­s of Angus County Council to discover the traffic pattern in the town. The survey, which will last for 12 hours, starting at 8pm, will show the number of vehicles making local journeys in the town and the number passing through. Ten census posts will be located strategica­lly throughout the town and on its boundaries.

Steve Carter’s colleagues at Scottish Enterprise Tayside were showing more than usual interest in the birth of his daughter. They wanted to know Gillian’s exact birth weight. This was understand­able as all had a wager on the new infant – in a good cause. The SET staff are raising funds for the Ninewells Cancer Research Appeal to establish a Biomedical Research Centre there. The sponsored weigh-in raised £100. The winner, guessing 6lb 60z, was Jack Martin, who donated his winnings to the fund.

The Stone of Destiny could be brought home to Perthshire after more than 700 years. Perth and Kinross Council is planning a homecoming for the ancient relic, which could be placed at the heart of a major cultural attraction in the centre. The move is part of a £20 million investment in the area’s cultural assets and could bring an annual £1m boost to the economy. Council leader Ian Miller said the authority had been in talks with Historic Environmen­t Scotland about moving the famous rock.
