Design flair helps jeweller to shine

Dundee designer Karen Smith enjoys the freedom of being her own boss

-

Karen Smith set up Karen Smith Jewellery and Metal Design in 2014. She shares the story behind her business.

Why did you start in business?

I wanted to have the creative freedom that comes with being your own boss. As well as having my own collections, I was keen to take on commissions to create unique pieces for customers. Learning how to make jewellery changed my life and I’ve always wanted to share my skills, so again running my own business allows me to deliver workshops.

How did you get to where you are today?

I studied jewellery making at Cardonald College and for the last 18 years I’ve worked with jewellers and goldsmiths in Canada, the Netherlands and Scotland. I decided to get a degree then a Masters at art school which allowed me to expand and learn more on the design and art side of things. I decided in 2013 that I wanted to set up my own business but it wasn’t until 2014 that I started trading.

Who has helped you?

I’ve received great support through Business Gateway’s DigitalBoost programme. While most of my sales are still coming from the shops and galleries as well as craft and trade fairs, I know the importance of having an online shop. Previously, I couldn’t update my website and have my full collection on sale but after receiving advice tailored for my needs via the DigitalBoost programme I can do it. It means my website is far more engaging and relevant.

Your biggest mistake?

Sticking with a stockist I had misgivings about. If something doesn’t feel right then it probably isn’t.

Your greatest achievement?

Securing Wear Eponymous as stockists. This is an e-commerce platform dedicated to affordable luxury and championing emerging fashion designers. We have a similar ethos and their customers reflect mine so it was the perfect partnership and helped me attract other stockists and open up to a wider audience. Also my jewellery has reached as far afield as Australia, New Zealand, America and Peru.

Hopes for the future?

My collections are stocked in outlets in Glasgow, Dundee, Perth and Angus so I would like to increase this number. Eventually I would love to have my own studio/ gallery.

Do you want to recruit?

Yes this is definitely one of my goals for the future. I would love to be in a position to offer someone a jewellery apprenticeship. Being able to employ people would also help me grow my brand and offer more variety to my customers.

What is the hardest thing about running a business?

Staying focused and positive when you feel like things aren’t going so well. It can be frustrating at times running your own business especially if you have set yourself a goal and you haven’t quite achieved it. However, it is important to remember there will always be ups and downs and never to give up.
