Former Tory councillor scoops top party role at Holyrood
A former Perth city councillor has scooped a top position in the Tories’ cabinet at Holyrood
In a shadow cabinet reshuffle MSP Alexander Stewart was promoted by Conservative party Scottish leader Ruth Davidson to the position of spokesperson and shadow minister for local government.
In this role, he will be Ms Davidson’s “right-hand man” in local government, overseeing, visiting and coordinating all the Conservative councillors in Scotland.
Mr Stewart said he had enjoyed a “fantastic first year” in the Scottish Parliament and was “honoured” by his new appointment.
“I’ve also thoroughly enjoyed the role of international development and external affairs.
“However, I am of course absolutely delighted with this new and highly responsible position,” said Mr Stewart.
“Receiving this vote of confidence from the leader of our party and to be quite literally her right-hand man in local government based on my extensive 18 years’ experience and wealth of knowledge in this field, is nothing short of inspiring.
“I will carry out my new role with absolute diligence and will also continue with my committees and constituency work, which I find immensely enjoyable and fulfilling.
“It will be an incredibly exciting year ahead, which will not be without its challenges.
“But I have always relished new opportunities and I look forward very much to getting started and to the meeting of new colleagues, as well as working with and reestablishing links with those I have worked with on numerous occasions in the past.”
