Charity worker fined for throwing eggs at SDL

-

A single arrest was made as the SDL march made its way through Perth.

Police intervened after Glasgow charity worker Thomas Roberts, who has a history of public order offences, crouched behind a car to hurl eggs at the far right protesters.

Each missed and instead splattered the wall and windows of one of the bars on Perth’s South Street, but his actions nonetheless roused their ire.

Police officers had to step in as members of the protest attempted to find out who was responsible for the attack.

They successfully defused the situation and Roberts faced little more than shouts and threats as he fled into Scott Street where he was apprehended.

Appearing at Perth Sheriff Court, the 25 year-old was told his actions could have inflamed an already tense atmosphere in the centre of Perth.

Depute fiscal Lisa Marshall said: “The SDL were protesting against the building of a new mosque in Perth.

“A counter protest was organised by various left-wing groups.

“Police officers were on foot patrol when they saw the accused crouch down behind a van to throw a quantity of eggs in the direction of the SDL protesters.

“The eggs missed and hit licensed premises, causing no lasting damage, though they did cause a reaction from the SDL.”

Roberts, of Boyd Street, Glasgow, admitted conducting himself in a disorderly manner and was fined £800.
