MSP claims new arts hub could help Perth compete with Dundee

-

A £3.5 million arts hub in Perth could help the city compete with Dundee, according to a Perthshire MSP.

Liz Smith, Scottish Conservative representative for the Mid Scotland and Fife, claims the move to transform the derelict St John’s Primary School into a home for artists, creative businesses and community education, will “increase the buzz” around Perth.

The Creative Exchange Perth will include offices, a café and arts space, while the old school playground will be transformed into a community garden.

Ms Smith said: “These are exciting times for the Fair City, what with the transformation of the city hall and Perth Museum. I believe the creation of an arts hub will increase the buzz around Perth.

“Taking old derelict buildings and putting them back into productive use is extremely important and I am pleased to see Perth and Kinross Council making progress with these plans.

“The arts and creative industries have traditionally found a home in Dundee but the creation of this new hub will allow Perth to compete with its neighbour in attracting this type of business.”

Workshop and Artists Studio Provision Scotland will manage the project, which will provide space for 24 artists and 12 creative businesses and will generate around 20 jobs during its construction and operation.

The council is investing £2.7m in the venture.

Jim Valentine, Perth and Kinross Council’s depute chief executive, commented: “This project recognises the importance of creative industries in growing the local economy.”
