Neilston B crowned club champions

-

After 12 heats involving 139 teams and 417 anglers and two knockout stages at LAKE OF

MENTEITH, Neilston B won the Scottish Club Championship finals.

James Litster, Tam Burnett and Brian MacKenzie caught 33 fish, eight more than nearest rivals Lintrathen Fly Fishers A (Neil Anderson, Mike Cordiner and Chris McAllister).

Top Rod on the day was James Litster with 14 fish and new national champion Brian MacKenzie was second with 13.

James had five in Lochend, three in Hotel Bay and six at Gateside and Malling.

Hot spots are currently in the south-east and east of the lake.

The algae was knocked down into the water column after a cold night (3C) and the lake was seen to be at turnover point with large areas of deeper clear water coming to the surface.

However, subsequent mild nights and flat calm days halted the turnover and allowed the buoyant algae to ascend and led to a build-up in the north-west shores (Malling and Gateside).

Stirling Council’s environmental health advice is that fishing should be for catch and release only. However, the algae has been analysed and is nontoxic and hopes are that there will be a return to catch and retain soon.

The cooling weather has brought about an improvement in water quality, and in the fishing, on MONIKIE AC waters.

In general, sink tip lines seem to be the order of the day with yellow dancers, black and green nomads, crunchers, cats whiskers and cormorants all taking.

The fish seem to be feeding heavily on minnows, but are still willing to take a sedge pattern when the conditions are right.

A few of the bigger fish have shown up in recent weeks with D Brown having one of 4lb 8oz off the North and I Duffus having a fish of 4lb 6oz off the Island.

Clubs out recently on the Island pond included: Blairgowrie AC, four boats, 26 fish for 50lb 6oz; RD AC, three boats, 14 fish for 28lb; CSSC Perth, six boats, 29 fish for 58lb 4oz; Dundee West End AC, six boats, 32 fish for 60lb 10oz.

FORBES OF KINGENNIE

hosted a ‘Casting for Recovery’ event, which teamed up flyfishing guides with women recovering from cancer.

A great day was enjoyed by all with every participant catching one fish or more.

Meanwhile, on the Boathouse, seven anglers from the Irvine Water Sports Club landed 14 fish for a total weight of 41lb (also returning two) and the Willis group took 20 fish for 64lb.

CDCs, sugar cube shipman, buzzers, cormorants and lures all scored well. The Burnside again performed well on dries, buzzers, nymphs and small lures.

The Willis group had 26 fish for 72lb; the Falconer group took 19 for 49lb; Jock Leslie returned 15; Mr Wales returned 12 and Tam Costello had six on catch/ release with the best a stunning rainbow estimated at 9lb.

On Sunday Kingennie hosted the Rosyth Civil Service Club who took nine fish for 32lb and returned a further 62 on the Bankside Pool. Their total included a fine rainbow of 7lb.

The Woodside Pool (any legal method) had two days which stood out.

On one day nine anglers had 27 fish for 60lb and on the other 22 anglers shared 46 for 97lb.
