Golf day swings into action to raise £5,000 for charities
Perthshire charities have been boosted by an annual charity golf day held in Perth.
The event was held at Craigie Hill and raised £5,000 for CHAS, Macmillan Cornhill, Guide Dogs, the Barrie Douglas Foundation and Motorvate Therapies.
Money was also donated to CHAS thanks to a donation from Craigie Hill members David Fleming and Jim Brown, who competed in the Glasgow to Edinburgh cycle race along with former St Johnstone players Jim Weir – now Forfar manager – and Kevin McGowne.
Deirdre McVean, chairman of the local branch of Guide Dogs, said: “We have 500 guide dogs across Scotland and around 15 locally. The wonderful support from the golf club will support the training of a future lifechanging guide dog at our Forfar centre.”
Susan Doogan, director with Motorvate Therapies, said: “We work with children and adults with ADHD, dyslexia, autism and other additional support needs. The funding from Craigie Hill will have a direct and positive impact on the lives of local families.”
Organiser Hugh McMaster said: “We had 24 teams competing for the Gordawn Trophy – a silver mounted shinty stick – which is played in memory of Gordon Leaver and Dawn Mitchell, who died after battling with cancer.”
A foundation in memory of Barrie Douglas, who died recently after falling ill while accompanying the Scotland youth team to a tournament in Spain, is being created by the Perthshire golfing community.
Mr McMaster added: “Barrie was a popular figure at Craigie Hill so we felt this donation was entirely appropriate.”
