Perth people honour the war dead with Poppyscotland remembrance ceremony at Mercat Cross.
The great and the good gather to pay tribute to those who served, and died, in conflicts through the years
The centre of Perth fell silent for the traditional Poppyscotland remembrance ceremony at the Mercat Cross.
Led by the Rev John Murdoch, he called on the gathering on King Edward Street yesterday to remember “the courage and self sacrifice” of those who had served in conflicts over the years.
After a short service and the traditional two minute silence at 11am, those present laid wreaths at the foot of the cross.
Among those paying their respects were Provost Dennis Melloy and Lord Lieutenant Brigadier Melville Jameson.
Representatives from the armed forces, the police and former servicemen and women joined councillors and members of the public at the sombre occasion.
Proceedings drew to a close with a lone piper playing.
Earlier in the day Provost Melloy led an act of remembrance and laid a wreath at the 51st Highland Division monument on the North Inch.
Today, there will be a service at the Bowerswell Memorial Home in Perth and tomorrow, Remembrance Sunday, there will be a civic parade from the council offices at 2 High Street to St John’s Kirk for a service, followed by a march past and salute.
Remembrance events will also be taking place in communities across Perth and Kinross including Crieff, Comrie, Auchterarder, St Fillans, Muthill, Braco, Blackford, Madderty and Blairgowrie.
Pupils at St John’s Academy in Perth have worked collaboratively to produce an eye-catching display of poppies.
Each pupil in the secondary school was invited to create their own poppy in memory of those who fought and died in conflict which were then used in a display.
