Petrie left to rue two points dropped

-

Montrose manager Stewart Petrie was left reflecting on two points dropped as his team were held at home by an Annan side that played for more than 20 minutes with 10 men.

The draw represented a chance missed for Montrose to go level at the top of League Two with Stirling Albion, who drew 1-1 at Clyde.

Petrie said: “That was a chance lost to gain on Stirling. In the first 15 minutes we were exceptional. We scored and also hit the bar, so it was frustrating to finish level.

“They had a man sent off and were hanging on, but fair play to them.

“We started the second half great and created some good chances then we lost a sloppy goal.

“I do not know if the sending-off helped us as we resorted to too many long balls.

“That is 13 points we have taken from the last 15 so I am not going to grumble.”

Montrose took the lead on seven minutes. Craig Johnston beat an opponent on the right and crossed to the near post for Chris Templeman to score.

A Templeman header from a corner crashed off the bar three minutes later.

Montrose needed a second goal to be more comfortable and they took the game to Annan at the start of the second half.

A close-range effort from Templeman was kept out by the foot of James Atkinson, then the keeper was at full stretch to save a Templeman free-kick.

Annan equalised on 61 minutes in a rare attack. Ryan Sinnamon sent in a free-kick and Steven Swinglehurst headed home.

Annan were reduced to 10 men on 61 minutes. Swinglehurst had been booked in the first half for a foul on Johnston and collected a second yellow from referee Lorraine Watson for bringing down Templeman.

Montrose tried to regain the lead and on 72 minutes a shot from Cammy Ballantyne hit the bar.

Five minutes from time a header from Graham Webster was cleared off the Annan line by Peter Watson.
