Hard work pays off as McGiffin in squad

-

Talented young Dundee Stars defenceman Cameron McGiffin is back in the squad to face the Guildford Flames tomorrow.

The 21-year-old has returned two weeks ahead of schedule thanks to his hard work and the care of team physio Airlie Beveridge.

He can still remember the second he was hurt in a collision with one of his team-mates against Sheffield Steelers.

“It was in the game against Sheffield. I went one way and one of my team-mates went the other,” he said.

It has been his worst hockey injury but, during his recovery, McGiffin made sure he was fully involved with the squad.

The GB under-age international attended training sessions and games and worked hard in the gym to pave the way for his reintroduction into the team.

Meanwhile, Fife Flyers assistant coach Jeff Hutchins has urged his men to copy the lead of Danick Gauthier.

He bagged four goals, three of them in 11 third-period minutes, as Fife roared back from a 5-1 deficit to edge Cardiff Devils 8-6 last Saturday.

Devils will head north smarting from the home defeat.

Hutchins said Gauthier earned his goals from driving the net and he urged his players to do the same.

“Sunday’s defeat at Guildford Flames was a blow, but we ran out of gas after Saturday’s big comeback after being 5-1 down,” he said.

“We’ll regroup ahead of Saturday and we’ve worked hard in training this week.”
