Public moves quickly to tear down racist posters
Anger after Nazi group puts up anti-refugee posters in Dundee city centre
Members of the public yesterday tore down posters advertising a Nazi group in Dundee.
The inflammatory posters were linked to a website owned by a group calling itself the System Resistance Network, which describes itself as openly fascist and supportive of Adolf Hitler.
The posters were fixed to a lamp-post on Marketgait and the wall surrounding the waterfront building site opposite the V&A building.
By 10am they had been torn down by outraged passersby.
The website links to the groups’ Twitter page, which has a number of racist “memes” that have proven popular with alt-right groups around the world.
Police have confirmed the contents of the posters, which are derogatory against refugees and call for “white supremacy” in the UK, would fall under hate crime legislation.
Dundee City Council recently announced a crackdown on illegal posters and flyers following complaints from the public.
The convener of community safety and public protection, Councillor Alan Ross, said: “This type of poster is completely unacceptable and unwelcome in Dundee.
“We have an inclusive, diverse and outward looking culture here and we won’t tolerate this type of discrimination.”
He added: “If you come across this type of poster you should contact us on 01382 433558 and we will deal with it.”
Last December National Action became the first neo-Nazi organisation to be banned by the Home Office, making becoming or being a member of the group a criminal offence.
Their Scottish equivalents, Scottish Dawn, have also now been banned.
Both groups have appeared at demonstrations alongside the far-right English and Scottish defence leagues, which held a demonstration in Perth in September.
The right wing demonstrators were outnumbered by a large group of anti-fascist and anti-racist protesters.
