Motorists urged to be prepared for what winter may bring

- Blair dingwall

Motorists have been warned of dangerous conditions on roads across Courier Country with Arctic temperatures expected to continue into today.

A Met Office yellow warning for snow and ice is in place for Tayside and Fife, and neighbouring Grampian, until 11am today; with wintry showers expected in parts of northern Perthshire into this morning.

It comes after flights to and from Edinburgh, Glasgow and Aberdeen were cancelled or disrupted yesterday after hazardous conditions continued to affect airports across England.

Chillingham, Northampton, was the coldest place in the country from Sunday night into Monday after the mercury dropped to -12.8C.

Dalwhinnie was the coldest place in Scotland at -11.3C, closely followed by -11.1C in Dumfriesshire and Tyndrum, in rural West Perthshire, at -10.6C.

Temperatures were expected to plummet again this morning to as low as -8C, with ice predicted to affect roads across Tayside and Fife as a result.

Police Scotland Tayside Division yesterday urged locals to “take extra care due to the weather conditions”, adding: “Please consider if your journey is necessary and allow extra time to get to your destination, driving to the road conditions being wary of ice or snow on the roads.”

Traffic Scotland has also warned drivers to charge their phones before journeys and to pack supplies including warm clothes, food and water in case of delays lasting “several hours”.

Tayside and Fife is once again expected to dodge the worst of the conditions today with no snow forecast for Dundee.

Met Office meteorologist Stuart Brooks said northern Perthshire, including the A93 Braemar to Perth around Glenshee, would see wintry conditions into this morning.

“There are one or two showers about, mostly affecting the northern part of Perthshire,” he added.

“But for most of the area it should be dry (into Tuesday morning), maybe seeing a few showers chipping the Fife coast for a time.”
