Title race wide open

-

Suddenly the Scottish League men’s championship race is wide open again after a weekend of shocks.

Dunfermline Reign and Stirling Knights were being toasted for opening up the table by beating St Mirren and Falkirk Fury.

Led by 31 points from Edinburgh Univ student Craig Ferguson and 26 from another student Jake Sirrell, Reign defeated Fury 99-95 at St Columba’s High.

Eric Potts added 20, Kieran Lynch 11 and Nicky Sim 10.

It was the second shock defeat in a row for Fury, who crashed out of the Scottish Cup to Edinburgh Kings.

“People were phoning us up from the other clubs and thanking us,” said a delighted Reign official John Day.

With Stirling Knights beating injury-stricken St Mirren 97-86 it means that at least five teams are still in touch.

Boroughmuir Blaze top the table with 21 points and three defeats but have played a game more than Saints and Reign who are joint second on 20 with two defeats each.

Kings have 19 with three defeats, Reign fifth with four losses and Knights sixth.

Tayside Muskies returned to winning ways with a solid 71-46 away win over Polonia Phoenix in Edinburgh.

Yhana Van Wees had another “double double” with 15 points and 17 rebounds while 16 -yearold Georgia McCabe scored 12 points.

St Andrews University led home side Glasgow Uni down the stretch but GU finished strongly to snatch a 46-40 win.
