The Dundee jute trade is well acquainted with the old saying that “troubles do not come singly.” They have faced serious problems in the past, but never have they had to encounter such a battalion of difficulties as they are up against at present. Maximum prices, export trade, conservation of the raw jute, have all been tackled and some of these matters are still unsolved. Indeed, the trade is grappling with the particular system which should be adopted to reduce the consumption of raw material.

Kim, the 10-year-old mongrel dog who proved he was man’s best friend, was awarded a collar and medal from the Scottish Dog Aid Society at Lochgelly Town Council last night. Kim, the pet of Alex McKinlay, who died early this year, summoned aid for his master several times when Mr McKinlay was ill. Provost Harry Bolan presented the collar and medal to Kim, who was brought along by Mr McKinlay’s daughter, Mrs Betty McGuire. Provost Bolan said: “Kim must have had a very good master.”

The new Dr Finlay television drama series, much of which was filmed in Auchtermuchty, could be shown around the world if its maker, Scottish Television, is successful in its bid to attract overseas networks. The company is attending a major sale event in Monte Carlo where networks and companies from around the world converge to buy television programmes. Dr Finlay is one of a number of productions STV is hoping to tempt overseas buyers with.

Noisy dogs are driving Tayside and Fife residents to the brink of despair. Councils have received 2,500 complaints about noisy animals in the past two years. While complaints have been received regarding cockerels and chickens, an investigation found noisy dogs made up the majority of the objections. Dog behaviourist Carolyn Menteith said it is often boredom that leads to pet dogs making such a noise. She said dog owners must take responsibility and give their pets a fulfilling life.
